"Competitiveness and innovation have become buzzwords of our time, and for good reason. The fast-changing and complex socioeconomic environment in which we live places strong demands on firms, institutions and territories to become and remain competitive, and to be constantly innovating in what they do and how they do it. Whether in business, government, research or other types of civil society institutions, there is a strong need for people with a solid understanding of these forces.

The Deusto Business School Master’s in Competitiveness and Innovation was established to respond to these needs. It trains both professionals and researchers in the skills and capabilities needed to lead the way in shaping a future where innovating and constructing the bases for sustainable and dynamic competitiveness will be the keys to success. It is the link between business and territory that is really crucial to understanding what drives competitiveness and innovation, and a unique feature of the Programme is its blending of expertise from business management and territorial development perspectives.

Indeed, the Programme relies on a close collaboration between Deusto Business School and Orkestra-Basque Institute of Competitiveness, one of the leading authorities on understanding and promoting territorial competitiveness. Through this collaboration participants will develop a unique sensitivity to the complex relationship between business competitiveness and innovation and their territorial contexts.

Recognising the different needs of participants, the Master’s in Competitiveness & Innovation offers a choice between two itineraries. Both share a common first-semester foundation in the drivers of competitiveness and innovation at the firm level and at territorial level, alongside key issues of social responsibility and sustainability in an inter-connected world. In the second semester they split into a professional itinerary built around a practical internship, and a research itinerary built around grounding in relevant research methodologies and practices.

The professional itinerary is designed for those who are interested in developing competitiveness and innovation specific management-level careers in private firms, consultancies, governments, technology and research centres, universities and civil society/ third sector organisations.

The research itinerary is designed for those who wish to pursue business management and/or social science research in the fields of competitiveness and innovation, for example through subsequent development of a PhD thesis.

As a participant in the Master’s you will find enthusiastic and dedicated international teaching staff bringing together a huge amount of research and practical experience in the issues being studied. You will also be part of an international community of students that themselves bring different backgrounds, perspectives and experiences to the learning environment.

Indeed, the first two Editions of the Programme have seen participants from 14 different countries and almost every continent. If you are interested in a management or research career that seeks to shape the future of your organisation and territory amidst the pressures to be competitive and innovative in a constantly changing world, then this Master’s is designed for you. On behalf of the team of faculty involved with the Master’s in Competitiveness and Innovation, I welcome you to apply to the programme and l look forward to speaking to you personally soon."
